In India when in 1954-55 the Hindu Code bill was introduced in the Parliament this issue of polygamy was discussed as before this bill the Hindus in India were allowed to have more then one wife at a time based on the Old Hindu Laws as taken from Manu Samriti. There was lots of protest on this issue but this bill got passed & resulted in the form of Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 that prevents a second marriage amongst the Hindus & the second marriage during the first one sustaining was void & punishable offence under section 494,495 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. This is the brief history of how a man marring two women became illegal in India amongst the Hindus. As far Muslims are concerned they can marry & have four legal wives at a time as they follow their own religious shariat law. The Christians, Parsis, Jews do not allow a second wife as per their personal matrimonial laws in India. Now your question should a man's marriage to two women at the same time made legal? There can be circumstances where such a marriage with two women can subsist without any personal enmities between the three & all can happily live together as it happens in Muslims in India so it can happen in Hindus too. But unfortunately the legal status of second wife will always be in doubts & unless a prior will is made regarding the properties of the husband it will be an issue of arguments for inheritance purpose, at the time of distribution of the properties of the deceased husband, if the second wife should be allowed a share in such a property or not, although the provisions of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956 in section 10 Rule1. - The intestate’s widow, or if there are more widow than one, all the widows together, shall take one share. But here the question will be if the second wife be given the legal status of wife or widow or not. If you go by the Hindu Marriage Act, 1954 the second wife has no status of wife as her marriage is void u/s 11 of the HMA, only her children get legitimacy under section 16 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1954. A lot of confusion exists in these provisions & till any legislature is brought about allowing such a second marriage as legal this whole issue will remain disputable. In case any legislature with regards to allow a second marriage to a man at the same time then it will be discriminate towards the women as they would like that they should also be allowed to have two husbands at the same time. Will this be acceptable to men? If they want legality in having two wives why not a woman having two husbands at the same time. Considering all these problems & many more that can arise by such legislature of allowing a man to have two wives in general will be creating more confusion & problems rather solving them. Lastly managing one wife itself is a big issue nowadays how one can think about two at the sametime?

Well, only if a woman's marriage to 2 or more men is made legal. Equal rights eh?
I think that polygamy can be acceptable and even beneficial to both men and women. Some will say that christianity is against it therefore it should be illegal, but in fact, the bible is full of polygamists and does not speak against having more than one spouse.
EDIT: HEHE, who's to say that a wife would allow her husband to have another wife? Sexism! Ha!

Yes.It is permitted under peculiar situations provided the man has to do justice and treat them equally in all respects.The examples of situations are-the mass death of men in the warlike incident leaving large number of widows when the remaining men can protect the family by marrying the widows additionally or the wife is sick and the help of a lady is required for his moderate life avoiding adulteration etc.This permission is given by The God Through Holy Qur-an to all mankind and strictly prohibited extramarital relations by eliminating circumstances leading to adulteration.

No. Why bothered being married? You can live with and screw 2 women, but seeing as marriage is the commitment of ONE person to another person, then it sort of defeats the point. Just move in together and get on with it.

Absolutely not! Number one, women get extremely insecure about something even as small as advances from other women, let alone proper flirting with another woman and not even thinking about actually MARRYING another woman!! And number two, it's kind of sexist. I mean, if men get to have two wives legally, then I bet you anything that women won't be able to, and even if they were permitted, the original husband would be unlikely to let them personally.

i shared a house with 2 women once and believe me its no picnic...if i was married to them i would have topped myself.... no matter how appealing it sounds the reality is you will spend more time down the pub

why don't you move to middle east and live in one of those arab countries? They can marry 4 wives!!! Or you can go and live in one of those poligamist compounds! Wow, what a great life that is!!! You sure are moving forward with your life!
