I drive a 1997 Toyota Rav 4. It's a 4 cylinder car so you'd think that the gas mileage would be good, but it isn't. I fill up gas almost everyday and it runs out so quick. it's ridiculous. I don't know if I have a leak in my tank or what... Does anyone have any ideas?

you might be buying gas and burning ethenol that or someone might have a siphon hose ready when you go to sleep either way your losing money . keep in mind how full your tank is when you park vehicle ,see if its at the same spot when you take off

Well contrary to what others have answered I don't think you literally mean that the gas has disappeared or is being stolen, that would be wierd. Do you literally "fill it up" everyday or do you just put some gas in. Does your gauge work properly? Fill the tank and record how many miles you get. Also ask yourself, is this a new problem? Did you just buy this car used and notice the bad mileage. Or have you owned it for a while and the mileage has gotten worse and worse? If it happened overnight then you could very well have a leak. Put flat cardboard boxes under your gas tank and engine and check them in the morning. Cover the basics:check your tire pressure, wear and alignment. Do a tune up (don't forget O2 sensors) and oil change. Have cooling system checked: a very hot engine is not efficient. Finally have the engine "coded" see if you have a bad sensor or two.
Hope this helps

While it is running look under the car and see if anything is leaking. After it has sat for a period of time look for any puddles. If none of these help get a locking gas cap and if that doesn't help take it to a garage and have them look it over may need a good tune up. Also check the tire pressure low pressure will hurt your mileage. I always start with the easy cheap fixes and work my way to the more expensive options. Good luck hope this helps

Hi there ,,,, I had a Honda civic ... same problem used gas like there was no tomorrow..
It had a leak on the fuel injectors... so when i drove the car it was squirting gas out of the injectors .. Luckily fr me it didnt set on fire. Take you car to a garage quick get it looked at... In the long run it less expensive than a tank of gas a day.
Also... check that you dont have a fuel tank leak or a leak in the fuel system.. problem is gas evaporates pretty quickly... so after you part go out every hour or so and look under the car... all the way to the engine...
Good luck and... get it checked out

I don't think there is any car that needs to fill up gas everyday unless if you are travelling like 400 to 500 km a day or filling like a buck or two of gas only.

Someone is either stealing your gas or there is a leak somewhere.

Go for a major check up.

how many miles are on your car? how many miles can you drive on a fill up? fill the tank and record the amount of gal. you put in. drive the car and fill it again. record the mileage and the gals. you put in and divide them this will give you your miles per gal. city should be 14 to 16. and highway will be18 to 20. if it is lower then that in the city check for leaks. may need tune-up, timing adjusted, or o2sensors, coolant temp sensor, and or thermostat.

I am assuming the engine runs fine? No lack of power?
No check engine light is on? Good. I will assume that.
Make sure the 4x4 is not stuck on. (if you have it) If the front hubs are still locked in (stuck), you are going to halve your gas milage.
Don't expect any indicator lights to answer this engagement problem. You need to get all 4 wheels in the air, and see if they are all turning. If they are, some repairs or new hubs are in order. Manual hubs last the longest, by the way.

When you park it at night and get up the next morning, look for gasoline under the car. that might tell you if you have a gas leak.

you know it may be time for tune up on it,if the spark plugs get to be in bad shape and everything else starts getting some miles on it also ,a good tune up would probably help it a lot.a friend of mine has one of those, and he says it does fair on gas,it may just be time to get it tuned up,it will do wonders for most vehicles ,good luck with it.

I think I would invest in a locking gas cap for the car. If you get my drift.
