This will sound strange, but I use both. When delivered papers as a 12-year-old, it was a paper rOUT. When I am going on a trip, I decide what rOOT I am going to take.

I use it so it rhymes with root. Come to think of it I can't recall a single time aside from Movies that I've heard anyone pronounce it differently.

If you are talking about 66 then it rhymes with root. If you are talking about a mail rural it rhymes with out.
