You, as does every human on the planet, have a flight or fight relex. No matter how much "training" you have in a martial art this relex, generally, will not alter. If you are a flight person you will "freeze up or flee or do just about anything but fight" My brother is a golden gloves champion (2xs), and a very good karate point fighter has trained for many, many years. But when you get him in a real altercation he is a flight person, not a fight. It is not a physical trait it is a mental one. Confidence is a part of it but it gos much deeper that wanting to believe your good and can handle yourself. I am not a doctor or anyone with any kind of degree but I would tell you to work on the mental aspect of the flight or fight. Remember some people are just that way, it isn't good or a bad thing it is just how you are. I think that reguardless of any skills if you can get out of a fight without fighting you did good, reguardless of why or how you did it.

Yesterday when my 12 year old brother threw a sock at me. I definately had the fight instinct, and as such beat him down. We were only play fighting tho.

When the judge sentenced me to prison. I tried to fight because I didn't think I could get very far running. I should have ran, I picked up more charges from hitting the cops!

My dog jumped up barking at something outside and knocked the sliding screen out so we thought someone was busting in the house. I stayed calm (this makes me laugh to recall it) and grabbed the gun but my teenage daughter tried to jam herself under a bed she wasn't even close to fitting under. I was ready to fight but it was just a cat or something.
