Depends on what time of the year you are going.
We are going during the week "after" thanksgiving, and we are paying over $600 for Nickelodeon hotel, but also staying at Hard Rock Cafe for a week.
I do believe there are many "cheap" hotels, but you get what you pay for.
Do a google search for Universal Orlando hotels. You'll get your answer there.

There are several mid-range hotels that will be listed as 'walking distance to Wet 'N Wild'. You can try to look up the Red Horse hotel, too. Its not a chain hotel, but a privately owned placed that refurbished an old Holiday Inn. If you'll have a car while you're there, you can also do a search for hotels that are on the north side of downtown. Once you get north of the city, you'll find non-tourist businesses so things lean more towards business class accomodations. I would suggest to look at Altamonte Springs, if possible. There are mid-range and cheap hotels near 436 and I-4 that are easy drives to Universal, but you could possibly walk to a good-size mall and a very nice lakefront park.

Universal Orlando has it s own resorts, however, they are not "cheap". Nevertheless, there are hundreds of hotels right near Universal. There are some righ across the street from it on Kirkman Rd, and also a lot more right on International Drive.
Best thing to do is to stay at one of those hotels in the areas I mentioned, particularly better on International Drive, since they seem to be somewhat cheaper there, plus you would be right next to all the fun and entertainment I-Drive offers.
If you are interested, we here at Interstate Tours are a Tour Operator in the area with over 10yrs of experience. We offer vacation packages, hotel accommodations, tickets and more. You can email us with more informationat info@interstatetours.com or visit us at http://www.interstatetours.com
Good Luck finding what you are looking for and hope that we may be able to assist you.

here's a link to the Royal Pacific hotel, this is Universal's cheapest hotel out of all 3 of the Universal Hotels
http://www.universalorlando.com/ht_rpr_rates_featured.html
On the Universal lot there is also the Portofino Bay hotel and the Hard Rock hotel. Right across the street there is the Double tree hotel. For really cheap stays right by the Double Tree there is a Best Western and a Holiday Inn

Check travelocity, orbitz, etc. look for hotel outside Disney but that includes transportation for the parks. I stayed at very good hotel five yrs ago and pay $35 per night It includes a small refrigerator, two double beds, TV, a/c coffeemaker, etc. It have a pool, restaurant and near other very good restaurants too. We saved a lot because of the free transportation. They had different schedules. Search you will find a good deal.

If you want a quality stay AND front-of-the-line access (an absolute necessity with those lines), stay at the Royal Pacific.

If for whatever reason you wish to forgo front-of-the-line, I think there was a 3-star Sheratin with rooms going at $120 a night, but I've never stayed there.

Just stay at the Royal Pacific.

Nothing is good...and cheap. Ya get what ya pay for. Don't always go for the cheapest place. Your hotel could be right next to a jail....or be overrun by welfare people who don't care how late they stay up and make noise.
