It is mental shorthand. Particularly in large cities we just meet too many people to evaluate them all as individuals so we classify them based on quick and easy stereotypes.
They are very inaccurate but very convenient, like fast food for the soul.

Going by statistics, in my area if I see a black teen or young adult, he probably isn't anyone to be around. I'm not racist, but my own two eyes don't lie to me. I have a couple black friends that aren't like that, but the rest are bad news. What can I say...
And this ain't coming out of a preppy white boys mouth either.

Now of course I don't hate one group of people. I have to know them first to make that decision.
