OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Supervisors at a meatpacking plant have fired or harassed dozens of Somali Muslim employees for trying to pray at sunset, violating civil rights laws, the workers and their advocates say.

The five- to 10-minute prayer, known as the maghrib, must be done within a 45-minute window around sunset, according to Muslim rules. The workers at the Swift & Co. plant in Grand Island say they quit, were fired or were verbally and physically harassed over the issue.

That's like the muslim cab drivers who refuse to pick up passengers who are carrying liquor and get this, they also refuse to pick up blind people who have seeing eyes dogs (dogs are supposedly dirty to them). I say, kick them all in the a** and send them packing.

This is not an easy question. The real issue is whether their request is reasonable. What percentage of the plant is Muslim who are wanting to take a break at the same time? A large percentage may make it difficult to keep the plant running continuously. The other issue is planning since sunset changes throughout the year. These employees want to take a break at different times throughout the year which may make it difficult to accommodate their request.

I have got to consider the agency in this one. If they had been in a position to hope on a required espresso holiday, then that is first-class. If the prayers did not final for greater than 15 minutes and the emplyees staggered their breaks in order that the road would not be affected, then I say pass forward and pray. But if that is no longer the case, then the agency has a correct to field and ultimately terminate that worker(s). The legislation is the legislation and it trumps any devout requirement. Seems exceedingly smug of any person to stroll off the road with out permission after which declare they had been handled unfairly given that they desired to comply with their faith. I say uncover a task which could permit that and quit whining.

Technically employers are only required to provide 8 hours a year for religious observance. it seems it would have been more sensible to allow the workers to schedule their evening break around these prayers if the business needs weren't impacted.

The Muslims seem to be taking over the entire friggin world with their prayers, rugs, Birkas, etc. Let them move back to the middle east because they will NEVER integrate in the west.

I'm surprised they aren't all illegal aliens, or are they. I'm not so sure I want them packing meat we might eat anyway.

Hey, wait a minute. Swift packs bacon and pork products. I thought they weren't supposed to be around that stuff

They should have just given them their break during that time. Of course, things like that should have come up during the interview.

If the supervisors really did this, they were wrong.

Do not take religion into the work place. You sure do not see any companies shutting down for 10 minutes for other religions to have prayer. This is BS.

Verda hb makes a very valid point.

Neither our government nor any business in the US should EVER cater to their religion. Christians don't have any special treatments during work, nor should they. Separation of church and state.
