Make sure you "make every effort" including letters with signed, returned receipt. Save everything! Give them about two months. That's probably the statutory limit in any case. Put a notice in the paper if necessary advising same. (The reason you want to do all this is to cover your butt in case they want to sue. You will have evidence that you have gone beyond what was required to advise the buyer to pick up their purchase.) Then, if you want to sell - and if you want to be 'nice' you can refund the original buyer's money. Every state would be different in determining if you would really 'owe' the buyer. But just in case - keep the money for a while.

I sold something on Craigslist and the person who purchased it sent me a check for half as we had agreed. I cashed the check and would hear every once in a while via email that they would be coming to pick it up. For me it was not a big deal, since it was a piece in my home and I just left it where it was. Eventually she sent me a letter apologizing and said she could not find anyone to help her move it and to just keep the money she had already paid. So that's what I did! Eventually I will put it back on the market, but I am not in any hurry right now.

If you have an address send them a letter CERTIFIED/RETURN mail that asks them to pick up the item by a specific date. Let them know if they do not pick up the item it will be sold. That way you can show that you attempted to notify them, and they failed to pick up the item. It could be that an emergency arose in their family and this just isn't the priority right now. Give them a bit of time.

they have three months to pick it up, after which you can charge a reasonable storage fee and after 6 months can resell it recoup storage costs.
