Hello. I am a 22 year-old woman who has never been pregnant. My mother is a breast cancer survivor. She had a localized, non-metastasizing, non-recurring tumor and was 35 at diagnosis.

I am currently started my period. Normally my breasts do get slightly swollen and tender for the week before my period starts; however, my breasts are larger than they normally get and have a deep ache. My nipples aren't really erect like they would be and sometimes feel a small film of stickiness. And today, I just noticed a small, small red spot next to my nipple. There's no "orange" characteristics to either breast.

What should I do? I don't have insurance since I'm no longer in school and therefore no longer a ward of my parents and covered under them. I just started a new job, so I'm not eligible for coverage. Should I just move to Canada? (sorry, lame attempt at humor)

What should I look out for? How long should I wait to see someone? And how in the world would I see someone without insurance?

At least go to a general family practice doctor and have it looked at.It would probally only cost between 60.00 and 100.00 dollars, but very well spent. Also if that is not possible almost every county in the country has low cost mammograms, check your county's internet site.If you get no where there then call your county health department and they should be able to refer you to the low cost mammograms. While you are uninsured check out Walmarts $4.00 pharmacy program. I printed the list of medications that they offer for $4.00 a RX and gave it to my Doctor. We work off that list as much as possible.Good Luck (But do get it checked ASAP)

If you are that concerned, I would try to see your gynecologist and just pay out of pocket. If you are a normal patient, they may allow this. If that doesn't work, you can go to a free-clinic or Planned Parenthood. They perform clinical breast exams. I'm not sure if you need insurance, but if you call the local one in your area, they could give you some information on how to pursue an exam.

My mom is also a breast cancer survivor. She was first diagnosed at 29 and again at 40. I freak out whenever I notice any abnormalities. I've had ultrasounds and mammograms and it is hard not to freak out when something seems wrong, especially with such a risky family history. Try hard to stay calm because you don't have a reason to worry yet. But do try to get an exam as soon as possible, even if your symptoms improve or go away.

First - don't panic!

Ok, this is probably just a slightly diferent reaction to the normal cyclic symptoms you have experienced in the past.

You mention you have just started a new job, and the stress etc this causes can cause a reaction like this.

If the symptoms persist instead of cycling ( I would leave it a full monthly cycle), then you should see a Dr.

Go to the local ER they have to see you. Get an answer from them and we'll go from there. How's that sound?
