This question always brings great debate. The question gives great leeway to the person to determine the qualities that make a great president. There are many great presidents that we could point to: Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jefferson, Monroe, etc. Each with his own foibles and strengths.
In my opinion, Washington would have to be given the nod as he was positioned to become "king" of America and turned it down. He could have served as president until he died and again he turned that down. He was a great leader of men and had a great deal of inner strength.
Just my opinion though.

Romare has good answers.
If I had to pick one, FDR. He brought us through the Depression and World War II, leaving us more prosperous and powerful than ever before.
