I introduced a goldfish into my aquarium, with my existing betta fish. When they showed signs of fighting, I removed the betta, and put him in a fishbowl of water that had been treated about 30 minutes before. Within about 2 hours of being in the new bowl, he had almost completely lost the red coloring in his body, and a little bit in his tail and fins. I have since removed the goldfish, and replaced the betta in his original aquarium. He seems to be behaving fairly normally, swimming around, etc, but hasn't shown any improvement in his coloring. Will his color return? Is there anything I can do to help him recover? How long should I expect it to take?

He also seems to have stopped eating as enthusiastically as usual.

Yes, he should recover and get his color back within a day or two. The only thing you can do at this point it turn off the tank light and allow him to have as much piece and quite as possible.

nothing lives with a goldfish except other golfish. That is a big BIG no-no. goldfish give off a huge amount of nitrogenous waste, which is toxic to all fish. It just so happens that goldfish can stand alot more of these toxins in thier water than any other f/w fish out there. That is what makes goldfish compatible with only other goldfish. With that in mind, fish who are literally choking on poopie naturally will be stressed. That's when we see secondary infections, particlularly pathogenic and parasitic. Ich is a parasite that as it manifests washes out the fishes color. They're characterized by white spots. Pathogens, on the other hand, cause the fins to fray and fall apart. Do a 75% water change and look into liquid meds that will zap the infection. Going back to Ich, if the white spots are not present, you will be shopping for an anitbiotic. If you see spots, you will be shopping for anti-parasite. They can set you up with a specific one at your local pet store. I hope this helps.

Loss of color is a symptom of the fish being too cold. Perhaps the new bowl was too cold for him, and now he is having a bit of a problem warming up.

I thought that feeding them the special betta food helped them keep their color.

Can't imagine what made your fish lose color so fast. Hpoe it works out well.

Not to scare you, but I had two betta fish that lost their coloring and they both died. It took about a week. I'm not sure what happened.
