I know it was never fully completed, but it wasn't a hoax. It did lead to some awesome anti-ballistic missle systems. I worked on SDI when I lived in Colorado Springs during the 80's. I had a lowly position it's true, a mere Purchasing Manager for the modules being built, but it was a fascinating job nonetheless. I can tell you the people who worked on this project were some very serious folks, not given to working on hoaxes or spinning tales for the media. I almost lost my clearance because I joined Green Peace while drunk at a CSN concert, not even kidding. Before I got back from vacation the head of Security knew I'd joined, it was amazing. (I know, unnecessary info but I still marvel at it)
I would say it was worth it as it led to better defense systems for us and a back down of the Soviet Union.

Well, I would argue not the merits of the war in Iraq, though, Hussein in the day was evil incarnated, but, the reason we are in the mess we are in is complex, but at the heart of the matter, is because the housing bubble and corresponding inane gambling on the market with debt instruments that assumed housing could never decrease in value. Human error and hubris represented well. The bail out is probably not going to do too much, but, it will help a little. How the banks are handled is very important. Without capital supplied by lenders, capitalism simply stops, or, is greatly reduced. Keep you eye on the banking crisis, it is vital to all concerned. Financial type here.

Let me see the Star Wars Missle defense program brought us the Patriot Missle Battery. This stopped many scuds which saved many lives including my own. You want me to say that was useless money? Now that North Korea has proven it can sucessfully launch and guide a balistic missle this idea is not needed. You want to tell us that this form of security was not money worth spending. The Star Wars program is now the MDA which used to be called the Space Command under the AF. I would've thought somebody who claims to have served in the AF you would've know this.

I slightly disagree.
Reagan proposed a rapid increase in short-term military spending so that we could reap a substantially higher long-term "peace dividend." This concept was the crucial centerpiece of Reagan's military ideology.
I think the general idea of Reagan's proposal was sound EXCEPT that he never planned that his increased military spending would develop a life of its own after he left office.

Yes. Reagan had an objective - and his methods, despite the expense, were proved very effective in helping the USSR crash and burn under the weight of its own ideology of communism.
Only time will tell if Bush's equally expensive objectives in Iraq will prove any where near as effective.
The only sure winners in both cases are the corporations supplying the goods needed to put these policies into action.

That was $800 million wasted on Reagan's imperialist fantasy. Imagine how far that money could have gone in providing assistance to the poor. It's a despicable and callous waste of valuable public funds.

Yes, because it helped bankrupt the soviet union, whuch helped bring about its eventual demise. Would the USSR have collapsed anyway? Possibly, but I think while an exspensive risk, I think Reagan knew the soviets would take the bait and try to out do the US to maintain the nuclear edge.

Reagan idea was born during one of many naps he took as president. Spending $800 billion for health care like cure for AIDS would have been better.

well, I don't know, but it did bring down the Berlin wall and gave freedom to millions of people, in the eastern bloc country's and caused Russia to sue for peace something no other president could do, we give credit to Kennedy when I will ask you , exactly what did Kennedy do?he allowed Russia to keep missiles in Cuba, and to harbor nuclear subs etc, all capable of knocking out Washington or any other east coast city, and did you know Regan did it without wasting one Americans life? what do you think?

The "Star Wars Defense System" laid the ground work for to days missile shield. It also contributed to the collapse of the U.S.S.R. They could not compete financially with the U.S.
