Probably because most of us are hobbled with paradigm problems. For a very long time we were ignorant of the fact that the Earth is a finite system where everything is interconnected. Now, with our rapidly converging technologies, we are beginning to understand our world and how it works. We have believed that we could do anything we wanted without consequence, and that has fostered a mentality that we could do anything for profit and no harm done. To recognize and accept that our actions are affecting the planet now, and will do more in the future, will require that in some ways we adapt our behavior and sometimes sacrifice our comfort to prevent damaging this world for ourselves and for those who come after us. It will also require that we invest money, energy and other resources into changing our technologies and energy resources such as oil and coal into other less damaging forms. This decision will cause conflict between those who are heavily invested in oil and coal, and who profit from these, with those who realize we must change. Mankind has always resisted change, especially when it comes to profits, so there will be a period of serious conflict over this until a new form of energy is available and enviornmental consequences become too obvious to ignore. This will take time and will be ugly for a while as those invested in the old view will not give in without a fight, and will continue to do everything they can to deny the facts. To do otherwise, they are persuaded, will cost them too much

I feel sorry for those 20,000 people! Imagine if they found out that the sun would keep moving and the rain would keep falling even if they hadn't died for it. Human sacrifice is an outdated idea. Aztecs and other ancient civilizations often believed in this sort of thing because they couldn't explain some natural occurrences. They also wanted to please the gods so that they wouldn't inflict some terrible punishment upon them. If we tried to introduce the idea of human sacrifice today, there would be a huge uproar, rebellions all around the world and probably a third world war. We'd probably all kill each other before the climate had a chance to. That's an interesting piece of information though! You learn something new every day.

Because the Environmentalists are promoting factually inaccurate information. Watch the Great Global Warming Swindle instead of just watching Inconvenient Truth and repeating Al Gore's talking points.

Because many people are all-or-nothing.
If their actions are not going to be fatal soon, then why bother trying to make the world a better place.
Some are also just so partisan-locked, that if anyone on the "other side" comes up with anything, they reflexively oppose it no matter how rational it may be.

This should be in catagory "Environment"
First of all, I will get this out of the way first, DEMOCRATS are being paranoid. The weather has changed since the beginning of time. No need to worry about weather, God is in control of the weather, afterall, He is the One who Creates the rain, snow, Hail, and Wind.
Now, as to people wanting to destroy our beautiful nature by cutting the beautiful trees, thusly, allowing mud to infiltrate our freshwater habitat, it is horrible indeed, and I agree, people do not care about the environment, but I can ASSURE you, God cares; and is not well pleased in man's wrong doing; by destroying His precious Creation.
The more I think about it though, I can only conclude, that it is man's GREED for money, that dicates why they are destroying the earth.
Oh yeah, that ALMIGHTY $BUCK$!!
LOVE OF $ IS THE ROOT OF *ALL* EVIL!!
