the small ball bounces down the stairs and the man picks it up and puts it in a table and as soon as he turns around the balls bounces down back again

...the scene is oh-so familiar; George C. Scott's character has just picked up a red rubber ball, which has mysteriously bounced down the massive stairs of a house he had just taken possession of; picking up the toy, and taking the ball with him, he walks about town, and onto a bridge, where he ponders for a moment, and then drops the ball into the river below. Resigned to the ball's fate, he returns to the house, with the lights darkened within; in the dim light of the house, he hears a resounding wet thud of something bouncing from the top of the stairs. In the dim moonlight, shining from outside, he is shocked when the red rubber ball, which he had previously disgarded on the bridge, has once again returned, bouncing down ther stairs, with a wet, resounding and echoing thump...thump...thump...thump...

...you're talking about the 1980 chiller, "The Changling"!!!
