Because the date of the elections is not in the Constitution.

The Constitution specifies that Congress shall set the date.

3 USC § 1

"The electors of President and Vice President shall be appointed, in each State, on the Tuesday next after the first Monday in November, in every fourth year succeeding every election of a President and Vice President."

Enacted June 25, 1948

By giving people the day off we would be making it easier for people who have less free time between work and family life to contribute to democracy. We would also be sending a national message that choosing our government is important enough to take some time off.

Moving Veterans day to the November 2nd (or 9th) would be a great comprimise.

Please don't give anybody any ideas. I think it's fine where it is. If you go around changing the day of elections, they might get "executively decided" to be on like the fifth monday after the full moon of augtember.
