Brisbane is a capital city. It is the capital of the State of Queensland. It is on the Brisbane River and not too far from the beaches. Its climate is sub-tropical, some would say tropical with mild, dry winters and warm wet summers.

It's a nice city (the capital of Queensland), with good shopping, a great museum and art gallery, built right next to a river (Brisbane River of course) - there's a Botanical Gardens within walking distance of the city and it's great to wander through. There's a University called QUT next to the Gardens. Brisbane actually has a great place for families called 'Southbank' which has a small fake beach, with real sand, and markets every week that sell great crafty things, and a stage area where you can see shows. Brisbane has a Mall called the Queen Street Mall (no cars allowed through there), as well as cinemas, office towers and a good public transport system (trains and buses). Weather is generally good, but winter can get a bit cold when the wind blows.

Jess,
You should check out www.ourbrisbane.com
'Our Brisbane' is a website for everything related to Brisbane.
In particular, check out www.ourbrisbane.com/maps - to see where Brisbane is in relation to South East Queensland. To see Brisbane in relation to the world, go to GoogleEarth or http://maps.google.com, and type in Brisbane. If it gives you more than one option, select Brisbane, Australia (there is a Brisbane in the US).
Activities and weather are all available on the ourbrisbane site. Beaches within 2 hours drive include the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.
Did you have anything specific in mind? Is your story fiction or non-fiction? Is there an 'age group' for the acitivities you are after?

Ive always lived in brissy or close to and love it more than anywhere else in Australia, I think its because it has such a mixture of things in such a small space that makes you adore this place so much, aswell as being only an hour from the beach and all the amusement parks and have the number one night club in the world "Family". The weather is generally warm, being called the sunshine state id say it says it all, though it can get humed. But like all places there are downfalls and one with me would be the one way streets all through the city! But all in all this city alike the whole of Australia were really friendly and down to earth!

Brisbane has a subtropical climate .. At the moment we are in the middle of summer & have had hot days in excess of 30 deg for a while now & have just had a cooling change with some long needed rain. The university of Qld has an excellent reputation & is one of Australia's leading Unis... Cost of living here is quite expensive ...my guess is that you will notice a substantial difference from what you're used to but our incomes here are higher as well.

For most people living in Brizzy, the Gold Coast where most beach goers go, is a half an hour to an hour drive from Brizzy... the weather is a 12 month Summer haha, we enjoy our sport (rugby, AFL etc.) and basically most people in Summer walk around in singlets, shorts and thongs haha :P
