Being a secret shopper is a real job, but often there are unscrupulous individuals preying upon those who would like the job. These guys will ask for money for training, which is pretty much unnecessary. There are no certificates for being a secret shopper. No special training apart from ordinary details of the job. It's not like becoming an electrician.
So, it's a real job, as anyone who works in retail will attest to, especially when they get the report on how they didn't help the customer well enough or something.
And you get a check, just like you would for any employment.
The link is to Snopes, which details some things about the scams and the real jobs.
If you are comfortable being a secret shopper--which is a pretty hated job by those in retail, then go ahead. Everyone will think of you as a spy or something, which is what you are, but that is coming from my side, which was the retail side, not the person doing the spying.
The job is legitimate and probably needed, though.

Some companies do hire secret shoppers - but they don't do it over the Internet. The "jobs" as secret shopper that you find on the Internet are scams.
