I get most of my fish from aquarium club fish auctions. I live near Cleveland and there are no less than 8 aquarium clubs within an hour and a half of my house.
Most of them have at least 2-3 fish auctions a year. Prices are really good because not everyone wants the same fish and many bags of 4-6 fish go for less than $6-10. At the end of the auction, if you wait that long, you can get bags for $1-2.
The club I belong to, Great Lakes Cichlid Society, has 3 auctions a year. At our spring auction, we had over 600 items for sale including tanks, food, plants, filters and of course fish. Of the 600 items, probably 450 were bags of fish. They are not all cichlids either, we get livebearers, bettas, killies, scavengers, etc. I even bought a bag of 4 dwarf blue crayfish for $6.
If you live near a large city, there will be aquarium clubs in and around it. Many of the members sell their excess fish when they spawn and produce many fry.

I ship them in from singapore or south america sometimes germany. but you can do that when you own a shop. if you think its hard to pick fish when you have one tank imagine trying to get the most exciting fish for 90 aquariums

I cheat, I own a shop :D
Seriously, most all of my fish at home come from hobbyist breeders and about 30% of the fish in my store come from at home breeders as well.

PetSmart, Petco, pet supplies plus. never gotten anything online yet, i just dont trust ups or fedex, atleast when i buy from a pet store i know i have a pretty good chance of getting them home alive plus if anything happens i can always return them.
