It has nothing to do with voice tone or posture.............. it is all based on prior history! If you do nothing but joke all the time - then others have an extremely difficult time in believing you when your are serious..........................

I wish I knew more details about your question. Are you coming home past your curfew and having to give your parents, or spouse reasons why this is so?...or are you often late for school or work and have to give your teachers or boss a different reason all the time?... or are you addicted to alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs, and you have to keep giving excuses to people why you can't quit? or is it none of the above? if it is all of the above, then you have a SERIOUS PROBLEM on your hands.
One time I was too sick to go to work, so I asked my husband to phone my boss to let him know... but my husband told my boss that I had been hit by a car which was FAR from the truth...so I got mad at my husband and asked him ''how am I going to explain this to my boss when I go back to work?'' When I did go back to work, my boss asked about me getting hit by a car and where was I hurt?...I told him [while really trying hard to hold back from laughing - because I was lying through my teeth] that I hurt my hip. So my advice to you, if that's what you're asking for, is to make your ''excuses'' more simple, reasonable and believable and do assert yourself and try to refrain from laughing a lot, or even a little bit.

If you are making an excuse to me or anything. Save your breath. You only damage your credibility. If you say you are going to do it, then do it. If you don't I will begin to distrust your word. If it persists, I will simply write you off as unreliable.

My preferred approach is simply to apologize, such as "I'm late, I'm sorry." The minute you begin adding on excuses, you lessen yourself in the eyes of most people.

I never take excuses seriously, so don't even bother.

But that's me. Other people are different.

What you should do is not make excuses.

On the other hand when you really don't want to do something
one excuse is just as good as another. Try this one:

"My mother is making soup".

Having to floss your cat is never an acceptable excuse.
