From a sociological perspective, I want to understand why this tends to be the mating trend in our society, in particular. It seems to be an overwhelmingly accepted norm for the man to be taller than his girl. I'd like to know what people think.

In simple, animal terms: The man is the dominant one, he is the powerful 'ruler' of his home. He is stronger in order to protect and fight, and stronger that his wide in oder to keep her in line. He must be bigger for intimidation as well as bigger to add to his strength.
The woman is frail, she is the submissive one who serves the male. She is weaker and more sensitive, she must be protected. In addition to this, her smaller height gives her a disadvantage which makes her a target and more likely to be weak.
A male wants a weak and small woman, after all he is the 'dominant' one. A woman wants a strong and tall male who will protect her and fight for her, for she is the 'submissive' one.
Despite today's view on the man vs woman hierarchy, this is what it is truly made up of. In primitive times, this is what was the rule and this is what we evolved from. The male is taller than the woman he takes just because Darwin's rule is in effect. It doesn't matter that nowadays we have feminists or anti feminists- this is our animal instincts dominating our actions when choosing a mate.

Sadly, I think it's the same reason why most men prefer women with shaved pubic hair and sexual area. Virile men because of their strong level of testosterone want the "Lolita" in every women.
Although they are rarely taller than their females,Asian men the worst of this category.The like the women to look like a little girl.

I'm 5'9 and 6 ft with heels. Tall guys always compliment me on my height and my bf is 6'9. A guy that is 6'7 approached me over the weekend. My ex bf was 6'4 and the one before that was 6'5. They all admired my height.

I think short women prefer taller men. I think it gives them a sence of security.

It's obvious, it's because they like to feel like the Macho Man and look like they can protect their girl. They also like to boss women around sometimes.

Actaully, I've had a boyfriend tell me why before. He told me that it almost made him feel stronger. Stronger because he could hold me close to him and feel like he was protecting me and comforting me. It's silly, but pretty sweet.

well for me i liked my wife for who she was........ she was a little short for me........... but i liked her as a person and really did not think about the height issue...........
