You need to skip the general practice doctor and the obgyn and head straight for the reproductive endocrinologist (RE). RE's are specialists that deal with all probable cases of infertility. I have been ttc #1 for 16 months and I went to my obgyn for the first few months. The problem there was he did not run any tests and went straight to fertility drugs. The fertility drugs made me sick. I knew something was wrong so my friend suggested I find an RE. When I went to the RE, she ran many tests and ruled out a lot of things right away which made me feel more at ease. I've only seen her once but I know I made a step in the right direction. I hope my experience helps you - baby dust!!

Well, he can go to a urologist to have his semen analysis done and your regular Dr can send you for tests like an HSG where they check your tubes.... just get all copies of the test results to bring to a fertility specialist should you need one.

Where are you located? If you are in the NY/NJ area.. RMA Reproductive Medicine Associates are the best .

Almost all Dr's will recommend his semen gets tested before putting you through tests and procedures that are not necessary. Some Dr's will test you both anyway, so they know exactly what you are dealing with from the get go.

Ive been through infertility and saw a specialist after 3 yrs of trying.. I'd be more than happy to chat if you have more concerns..

I totally agree that you need to skip all the other doctors and head right to the Reproductive Endocrinologist. They are specialists in infertility problems and would be able to perform all the tests necessary on both you and your husband. Also - they will provide directed treatment to deal with whatever issues you may have that might be getting in the way of conceiving. I wasted a lot of time bouncing between my OB-GYN and my primary care physician as neither was a specialist in infertility issues. Good luck to you and your husband!

There are countless reasons for being infertile (don't play the blame game... 40% it is his fault 40% is because of her and 20% is unexplained!)

count 14 days back from your (next) expected period that is when you should be ovulating (HAVING SEX!)

There are certain factors that could make your cycles irregular like PCOS, Obesity, Thyroid problems, Diabetes, certain STDs...

Sperm can live up to 72 hours in you, so if you have intercourse every other day days 10-20 you should be covered.

do a web search for ovulation calenders. This will give you a more accurate time.

I took Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid), talk to your Gyno about it. Weigh your options. Before he gives you a percription he will want to do a seman test on your husband and a few blood tests on you to make sure your hormon levals (and such) are all up to par. I would skip your general family dr. and go to your Gyno. I wouldn't bother with the fertility specialist just yet....

Check out some good books about the issue my favorite is "A Few Good Eggs" by Julie Vargo... and do a web search for a ovulation calender, that might explain a few things too!

You need to ovulate to get prego ;0)

We have been trying for over a year! (I have hypothyroidism, and polycysitic ovaries). I got pregnate the first month on Clomid.

There are pills you can take (that ARE NOT bc) to make you have a period, and there are pills you can take to make you more fertile. Good luck girl!

You can start with your regular OB-GYN. They will check you for abnormalities, and yes, a semen analysis is part of step 1.
Most OB-Gyns do the first few steps and you can probably get in and get that done while you are waiting on your specialist appointment. They can give you a referral to a good fertility specialist and start the investigations and treatment.

My husband and I were having the same problems someone asked us how often do you have sex we stated everyday at least once or twice. They suggested waiting a week for his sperm count to build up before having sex and it worked.

Get him checked first and then start with your gyn to be checked out and if needed they will send you to a fertility dr.
