At this point if you replaced your motor with the cheapest way out,- a new Ford short block plus labor, you'll be spending very close to more money than the truck's worth. Of course you'd be banking on the fact your cylinder heads are OK as. With 137,000 miles and the total truck care miles point to the fact they won't be. You may decide to buy a used engine guaranteed out of a wreck.
Did you purchase this truck new? If not, somewhere along the ling someone wasn't very religious about service overall service and upkeep. The gasoline motors in these trucks like lots of gas and are quite reliable. The transmissions are somewhat of a week sister.

Before that question could be answered by anyone, they should know many things before answering.
How good is the rest of the vehicle, such as, condition of interior, condition of the rest of the running gear, front end, front and rear suspension, and of course the body.
Figure the cost of additonal repairs that might be needed with engine replacement, like water pump, fuel injectors, and any other items that may be needed while the engine is out and being changed,. then figure the loss of getting rid of your present vehicle. If all is well with what you have other than the motor, then the best bet is a new engine.
If you have one of those Ford 3.8 jobs, that took the road to ruin by a blown head gasket, forget it and get something else as Ford has not yet fixed the problem and will not honor the warranty beyond the initial time, knowing they have a problem.
The 3.0 engine had no such problem.

If a dealership says its a basket case then you know your not going to git any trade in worth a darn on it,so if you like it an engine is a whole lot cheapr than a new car. IF its in good condition other wise that is.....George

whats your financial situation like? you wont get anything for a trade with it, but if money isnt a big deal then get a new car or look for good used deals. otherwise, get an engine overhaul and hope for a few more good years.

Try to find an engine, same year, same size, etc. It's a more economical solution
