I was just reading Thomas S's question about the hypothetical draft situation, and I was wondering why if you tell that you are gay you can get kicked out of the military?

Is there an actual reason or are they just discriminating against gays?

any person who admits to homosexual activity in the military will get kicked out of the military. it is part of the dont ask, dont tell policy. it is a discrimination against gays because straight people are afraid that gay people can co-exist better than straight people.

Why? Because Congress and the top brass at the Pentagon said that gays can't serve, that's why. They all believe that having openly gay people in the military is disruptive and that it hurts troop morale. They believe that they will lose more than they gain if they have openly gay people -- more in the way of new recruits.

I think there's a documentary somewhere about this...if memory serves me correct it's called "Saving Ryan's Privates". Granted I never actually saw it but it looks like it would be a good source of explanation.

Bill Clinton instituted a "don't ask don't tell" policy. Gays can serve as long as they are closeted.
