Basically, the unspoken rule about anime shows, is that it is ONLY an anime if it was a manga first. That is to say, there was a manga, for lack of a better word a 'comic', first and then an anime, or again lack of a better word a 'cartoon' is based upon said manga. But anime and manga mostly come from Japan, or i consider the "true" animes to come from there, the best ones do anyway. Plus there are certain styles of drawing anime, u know the huge eyes and small mouths, and with the girls the huge boobs.

Cartoons are an animation just like anime. In fact anime means "animation" in japanese, but really the things that set them apart is the fact that all anime was a manga series FIRST. And that can't be said for any cartoon shows.
Also we read manga "backwards" because that's the way it is read in japan, it helps preserve the experience of reading real japanese manga. Or something, not all of it is read that way though.

Comics and mangas are basically the same, manga is the term for comics in Japan. Anime was the term used to discribe Japanese animation or as Americans would say cartoons... hense you have Cartoon Network, Nicklelodeon and Disney channel catering to children. The main difference between them is that the Japanese versions don't label these mediums as just for kids. It's as if they have no boundaries, no limits. In the U.S. or Europe when you say comics it's automatic you will hear about super heroes but in manga and anime they have topics ranging from cooking , to high school life, normal folks to out of this world kind of stories. You might say it has this unique Japanese quirkiness. They have a broader sense of perspective than their western counterparts w/c is now very popular. Manga and anime are a popular part of culture nowadays wherein just a few years ago they were known only to a few.

for the most part the summerize anime as having a storyline and cartoons not having one. japanese cartoons doesnt mean its anime.

for example of a cartoon bugs bunny, simpsons if something drastically happend in todays episode everything will be ok in the next

anime to me can be u.s. or from japan for example x-men spiderman etc. and the thousands of japanese anime
these all follow a story line if something happens it will carry over though the series it will affect the character

this is just my opinion of the difference

another HUGE difference in comics and manga is the arrangement of pages ... for lack of a better term, manga is printed "backwards" compared to comics ... instead of reading from upper most left frame to lower most right frame, left pages to right, Manga is read from upper right frame to lower left, right pages to left ... so basically you start at the back and go in reverse that you would for a regular US comic

"Anime" in New York means Japanese animated cartoons,
although the word itself is probably French. My favorite is
a cute cartoon with a jingle in the beginning that is overwhelming to me, and I play it over and over again, feeling totally joyful. The title is Kirume----pronounced "kir-room-eee". She is a female robot, cute as a button, who has dynamite powers of combat, and who loves her little "master" to no end. Ha ha ha
