i have been very eager to start solids with my son. He turned 4 months yesterday and this morning i fed him a few spoons of rice cereal.. He didnt get any in this mouth, he spit everything back out. Does this mean that the reflex that won't let him eat solids is still present? Or will it take him a couple of tries? Should i stop and try again in a few weeks? He didnt' dislike it, just liked it better on his clothes :)

Did anyone else start this early? When did you start giving fruit/veggie?

And how long did it take for your baby to eat solids well?

Reflex* not reflux!! Babies have a reflex that goes away between 4-6 months that doesnt let them get food to the back of their mouths and swallow. Thats what i was talking about

luisamapacha: He's not chowing down rice... so how is he going to grow up obese? Solids can be introduced anywhere between 4-6 months.. Rice doesnt have any nutricional value, b/c it's a "practice food" that is less likely to cause allergies.. Don't you worry, i did my research!!! Do yours.

You can give it another go tomorrow and wait a couple of days and try again. There are many different ideas on when to start giving cereal but it is up to when you and your ped think he is ready. I started at 4 months with rice cereal. I can't remember exactly when I started with fruit and veggies, but believe it was about a month to a month and a half later. I did the one at a time for a few days and added another after we were sure there were no problems with allergies. Sounds like you did your research, so keep doing what you think is best for you and your baby.

First, talk to your pediatrician on this. It sounds like your son isn't ready yet. He is still spitting out on reflex.

Also...Why are you eager?? It is about the health of your son, not what you are anxious to do, right?

It is recommended that you wait until your son is at least 6 months before you try solids....unless your doctor thinks you need to start him earlier for some reason.

When you do try again (in another month or two), give him a few spoonfuls that are very wet (soupy). After a few days, he should figure it out.

Good luck!

Start giving him fruits and veggies around 6 months on the level 1. To get him to eat the rice cereal try leaving the spoon in his mouth so that he can eat it and yes it may be his refluxes thats why it is easier for them to eat while keeping the spoon in there mouth. See if that helps.

Most infants start at 4 months--we had to get the cereal VERY milk and nearly spoon milk into his mouth. The first week or so it went...interestingly. Rice cereal was everywhere but his mouth.

Eventually he liked it, and he even looked forward to it.

Fruits and veggies come around 6 months or when your pediatirican gives you the clear.

I started at about 4 months with my daughter. If you or the baby's father have issues with allergies (esp. food related ones) I have read that it is better to wait a bit. Your baby will likely spit out the food for some time to come but he eventually will get it. I think some kiddos aren't quite ready by 4 months but it's worth a shot. I tried it intermittently if I remember correctly. Best of luck!

Do NOT feed babies rice. It has no nutritional value whatsoever. Your baby doesn't need anything solid till 6 months old. Forcing the issue has been proven to lead to food allergies and obesity.

4 months is too early.

That he still has his tongue thrust reflex should tell you that he is not developmentally ready for the introduction of solids.

Shelve it for another couple of months, and enjoy these too-short infant days. He'll be eating your cupboards bare in just a few more years !

perhaps he did not like it. it doesn't sound like reflux if all he did was spit it out.

"they" say you have to give a kid food several times before they start to like it.

i am not sure about other foods. i did not feed any of my kids solids until they were 12 months due to many food allergies in my family.

my doctor told me to use a 3 to 1,mixture of formula & cereal.& to add a little sugar,to make it taste better..when i started this my baby wasnt as fussy..she had been starving! soon she got to sleeping better at night....this was at 2 weeks...i've known of dr's who recommend only formula for months!!!!!!!!!!!poor babies...POOR MOMS....then there are dr's who say put a little cereal in the formula...that way they drink it.Your baby probably hasnt got use to tasting "real food" or may have needed a little sugar(DO NOT use artificial sweetner or honey as this can be harmful for a new baby)...if it taste better ,he or she will probably be more likely to eat it...i started,w/just th e3 tblspoons of formula & 1 talblespoon of cereal...we chose oatmeal,,but rice was her favorite!!!!!!;hope this helps..little ones get hungry too.wait til they try "table food" emmmm, mashed potatoes,,etc.......my baby also loved sweet potato & apple sauce baby food.she stlll loves apple sauce, but you cant get her near a sweet potato!!!!we then started her on baby food at about 6 months..they'll usually let you know when they arent getting enough to eat & need more nutrition...& especially more loving...have fun w/your new baby! lol
