first pelvic exam?

my girlfriend is getting her first pelvic exam tmrw. it is becuase she is going on birth control. i am unsure if she is just getting a pap test, or a full exam. assuming shes getting a full exam, what can she expect? how long will it take? what do they do? does it hurt? share your experiences. thanks a lot!

Hopefully, they'll give her the full exam. I am not going to list the details here, as it's no fun thinking about what happens.

But basically, if she has a full pelvic, they'll check out her vagina and vulva, check her uterus and ovaries, do a breast exam, and get the pap smear. When I go to the gyno, they also take my vitals, listen to my heart and lung sounds, and ask me any health-related questions.

She will probably experience some discomfort during the procedure, but a good practitioner will ensure she is relaxed and be gentle. She should tell them it's her first pelvic by the way so they'll know to be especially gentle.

I'm guessing because it's her first exam and she's going on bc she'll get a full exam. It's not as bad as it seems, it doesn't take a long time and if she's calm and honest with the doctor, it will make for a better experience. Based on my own experiences-- they'll first probably weigh her and do blood pressure and stuff, just like a normal doctor's visit. She'll also have to give a urine sample. A nurse will have her take off all of her clothes and put on a gown of some kind while she waits for the doctor. She'll have to take off all her clothes because a lot of gynos do a quick breast examanation while the patient is there (just feeling for any abnormalities). The doctor will use a speculum to open the vagina so he/she can do a pap smear and see any abnormalities inside the vagina. The pap smear is just like a strep throat test, only on the vagina-- just a quick swab. The doctor will probably also feel the outside of the abdomen for any irregularities and may also do this with her/his fingers inside the patient. Doctor will probably ask some questions and see if there's anything your gf wants to talk about and that will be it. It doesn't take long at all and if she stays calm, it'll be over before she knows it. My gyno has posters of dogs and cats on the ceilings to look at while you're getting examed to take your mind off of it. If there's no problems and everything's normal, your gf shouldn't have to go back for another year. (Unless her doctor wants her to do a check in to see how she's tolorating the bc prescription after a few weeks.)
