I've actually got Hawk on right now (I'm probably another half-inning from hitting my wall). He's still crying about a missed strike call from three or four innings ago. He is ABSOLUTELY the worst announcer in baseball (worse than anyone Fox or ESPN can counter with). I've yet to hear a minor league announcer who doesn't blow him out of the water.
The strange thing is, you'd expect to hear an announcer of his caliber in a smaller market like Kansas City or Milwaukee, but the announcers in those cities are far better than he is. Do the White Sox simply not want to spend any money on such things? I'd be embarrassed if he were a fan of my team, let alone affiliated with them in any way. And his good-old-boy "catch phrases?" "He gone?" Any single A teams in Oklahoma need an announcer? Do Chicago a favor....

Hawk is both the worst announcer and most annoying. If the ChiSox are playing a team that I like (i.e Red Sox or Cubs) and Hawk is the announcer I'll put the tv on mute so I don't have to put up with "he gone!!" and the most annoying hr call "you can put it on the boooaaaarrrrrrdddddd.....yes!".
Two othe announcers I'll due the same thing too are Tim McCarver and Joe Buck. Joe's dad Jack Buck was a great announcer but Joe is flat out horrible. Being a Cubs fan Len Kasper isn't exactly the second coming of Steve Stone. Brenly is tolerable though.

Being a Cubs fan who somehow doesn't hate the White Sox, I get a chance to hear Hawk quite a bit. I think he's a typical "homer", which is what most people watching their local broadcasts want. I think that he tends to be a good announcer when the Sox are playing well, but when they are losing, he tends to start complaining about the umpires, questioning every single call that goes against the White Sox. On a regular basis, I find some other announcers much more annoying - Joe Buck is horrible in my opinion, and the fact that he usually works with Tim McCarver makes it even more painful to listen to. Joe Morgan is another one that really annoys me - you'd swear by the way he talks about himself that he never made an error, never struck out - a perfect example of someone being "a legend in his own mind."

What a great question!
Fire Joe Morgan is a good site to read complaints about broadcasters, but they are spared much of "The Hawk." As a Twins fan, I was indifferent to the White Sox until I heard Hawk and Wimpy. Now I root against them almost as much as I root for the Twins.
McCarver and Morgan are idiots, Joe Buck is more than likely the milkman's son than his dad's, and yes there are homers everywhere.
But Harrelson's schtick was old when it was new and never ever changes.
Could there be worse without the apocalypse?

To be honest I've only heard the Hawk a couple of times so I'm not really qulified to answer that part. From what I'm reading here, Hawk was better on the field then he is behind the mic.
However, (and you could see this coming) I have, unfortunately, had to put up with Tim McCarver and Chip Carey too, too many times. Harry's son just doesn't have the talent or flare he did. Now Chip's son, Skip, I can take.

As an Orioles fan, I can vouch for Noah's Dad that Reghi was not good - but he was nowhere near as bad as Harrelson. Pity any fan whose team plays the White Sox and can only get the game WGN.
To answer your question, he's both.

I mean if you are upset that's he's a homer, he's not the only one in baseball, or even in his city. I know it's sacreliedge, but Ron Santo bleeds Cub blue on the air, and is not really a dime's worth of difference from Harrelson. In New York, there's John Sterling on the radio, and Michael Kay on TV who obnoxiously cheer good Yankee plays and wins.

Sorry to disagree with you but the worst is a tie between Joe Buck and Tim McCarver. They are both horrible.
