First of all you probably won't believe me but it has happened so many times I can't ignore it anymore. I work in a large department store, and have for the past two years. I started noticing I would think about someone one or two days, or even minutes before and then they would come through my lane. I thought it was just a coincidence because I think about alot of people but the other day I thought of someone who had never come through my lane before and then today they came through my lane... and this is not the first time that exact thing happened... it has happened way too many times for me to ignore and I can't brush it off as a coincidence anymore because it has bypassed probability... but now I just want to know what it means?

I don't think you guys understand. It is not just chance because it has happened so frequently that now I've started expecting to see the person when I think of them. A test for this would be to say to one of my co-workers: "so and so will come through my lane either today or tomorrow". If I try to think of people and make a list it won't happen because it doesn't work that way. I have no control over it. I do not know what they willl be wearing because the only warning I get is that I will think of the person, be it someone I haven't seen for years, months, or a few days.

this is one of the signs that identify -precognition-
and you literally "catch" the "message", next time when this happens to you ask the person if they were thinking of seeing
you, you'll be amaze how they will response!
there is another more rigurous approach in a method
called Remote Viewing,the definition might be this;
Signal: Something that incites into action; an immediate cause or impulse. In radio propagation theory, the carrier wave that is received by the radio or radar receiving set.

I really like joie_de_cur's answer. I saw a sign one time that really sruck a chord with me. It said :
"Coincidence is when god works a miracle and wishes to remain anonymous".
I think humans have several abilities that we are yet ignorant of because of our obssession to explain and categorize everything with our "science." While I believe strongly in the scientific method and the fruits it has provided, I think it is the paramount of arrogance to flatly state that if something cannot be proven, then it does not exist or is not true. Science itself has undergone many revisions based on just this premise - so who is to say that humans don't have some pre-cognitive, or other paranormal ability?
I think that only you can know the meaning of it, but I do believe you. Namaste'

Okay, this might be more weird than the paranormal explanation, but there is science to back it up. People, particularly women, have a very good scent memory. Smells that are even almost entirely undetectable can make you remember certain people, places or times.

Individual people have their own pheromones and scents that they give off, which you won't necessarily notice, but your brain still does notice. Even from almost 100 feet away, these aromatic molecules can drift out in the air and come into contact with you. If your brain recognizes the shape of these molecules, and also knows that it was in contact with them when a certain person was around, it may trigger an image or memory of that person. This explanation is entirely hypothetical, but is also entirely possible.

My opinion:
We are creatures of habit. I go to the same supermarket every other day or so. When I get there, the shortest line dictates which line I go through, unless I am hot for some new checker girl or something. So maybe you remember your regular customers, either you are fast on the days you think of them and they pick your line or they decide to choose your line. There is no other way a person will get in your line. Sorry.
If I have ten things , I get in the ten things and under line for obvious reasons.
If I have lots, then I choose the shortest line every time. It is only the medium amount days that I would ever choose a longer line just to be in that checkers line for personal reasons.

This is an example of selection bias:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selection_bias

In a selectively biased measurement, you tend to remember all the times you thought of someone and they appeared, and forget all the times you thought of someone and they didn't appear.

Here's a simple experiment to tell if you really have any supernatural abilities in this regard: While you're at the department store, think of THIRTY people that you have never seen in the department store, and write down their names. If all thirty people show up within a day or two, you'll know something is weird. If zero, one, or two of them show up, you'll know that reality is working in the usual way, where improbable events happen only rarely.

I think lithiumdeuteride and Craig are on the money, although I'm sure you're skeptical of their answers. But that's alright. Mysterious things in life sometimes are hard to understand. There are always explanations and sometimes we are not ready to accept them, especially if they are not as exciting as we had hoped.

I'd also like to add that what may be tipping you off is the sound of your friends' voices among the other shoppers. It may not be very distinguishable amongst the other noise but subconsciously you could be aware of it. Also, you may be catching a glimpse of a friend out of the corner of your eye before they arrive in your line, and again it may be a subconscious thing.

I've had things like this happen to me. I try to be very scientific in these instances, testing it to see when it does/doesn't happen. I don't want to rush to any assumptions. For me personally, I think it means I am in tune with the Universe and flowing with it. I think I am being given an opportunity to trust myself spiritually, and to trust that there is something beyond the physical world. I would reflect on it quietly, in a moment I can be alone, and ask why it's happening to me. I would look for the answer inside of myself.

You are experiencing confirmation bias.

When you think of someone write their name down on a list with the date you thought of them. If they come in write down the date next to their name on a list. Chances are that once it's all in black in white you will see it is just coincidence.

Eh, it could be any number of things and I wouldn't necessarily say it is "paranormal".

You could be slightly pre-cognitive or you can just remember patterns easily and "expect" certain people to show up because they are regular customers...and dude with the scent theory has a good idea also.

There is no such thing as a coincidence, only situations for
which we lack sufficient information for rational explanation.

Two possibilities:

1/ The people are thinking hard enough about coming to the
store for you to read it, or

2/ You are bringing them to the store.
