Gas Stations by far!
Rest areas feel so truck stop-ish and with gas stations its a good way to stock up on any essentials you need.
But actually I feel rest areas are better if you have a lot of family.. haha

Rest Areas - they are usually cleaner and still have vending machines if you need a snack or drink
But there are fewer Rest Areas so some times it has to be a Gas Station ~ nature calls.

Depends....if it's during the day I would say rest areas....but at night....gas stations. Some of the rest areas are just creepy!

Rest areas tend to be slightly cleaner than gas stations, probably because they have more room for people to pee on the floor (so it's dispersed over a wider area). Also, you have a greenbelt once you get outside to walk on to decontaminate your shoes somewhat. Gas stations only have fuel soaked cement to take away that 'not so fresh' feeling that your shoes get. Neither of them are very clean though.
