I have a light switch in an extra bedroom that controls an outlet (to plug in a lamp, etc). Anyway, the outlet that the switch controls is in a horrible area. I was wondering if there was any way to change which outlet the light switch operates without having to do any wiring.

I thought there may be something like a transmitter that plugs into the switched outlet and a receiver that you could plug into the new outlet and plug a lamp into that. I can't find anything like that though. Does anything like this exist? I know there are wireless light switches, etc but I just want to use the switch that is already there.

There are X10 ones that do that. Below is a link to a device that has switches on it. It sends the commands through the house wiring so that you can turn on a light that is plugged into a receiver located in any standard outlet. There are also simple ones to do just what you asked. Some also accept commands from your TV remote to turn on things in any room in the house.

Moving Light Switch Without Wiring

My first peice of advice to you is do not listen to anyone on answers regarding anything electrical, it is very painful for me to read the majority of the comments people make. There is a chance (about 25%) that you can move it by just changing a few wires. There are several ways to wire a switch controlled recepticle, the most basic ( and the way you want to hope that it is done) is like this: Your feed (a wire that is always hot) will be black, and the wire controlling the switch controlled recepticle will be red, and sometimes the electrician will pull both in and out of a recepticle and tie the reds together, almost like killing 2 birds with one stone. Pull out the recepticle you wish to be controlled by the switch and see if there are red wires with a wirenut on them, if so, take it apart, put your red on your desired recepticle, take the red off the old switch controlled and put the black on. If you wish to have the top half always on, and the bottom half of the recept to be switch contolled, there is a little tab on the side of the screws you can break and seperate the 2. Like I said, the odds of it being wired like this are slim, but it's worth a shot - good luck.

there is a device like this but you will have to use the switch that they provide you. it is a battery powered unit that is surface mount. you could mount it next to your existing switch. these devices are at most home depot type stores usually next to the dimmers. there is a receiver unit that plugs into an outlet and you plug the lamp into that unit. the receiver gets a signal from the switch unit and turns the lamp on or off accordingly. power is supplied from the outlet that the receiver is plugged into. unless you are willing to put up with an extension cord you will be limited to one of the other outlet locations.

If you've got enough money you could buy or create the device to do what you want done but it's not practical. So, unfortunately, the answer to your question is no, there is no way to do what you want without rewiring. And the rewiring isn't a slam dunk. They do have sound controlled lamps if that might help.

Nope sorry my friend there isnt. There was at one time Tessla had come up with his electrical ideas that was awesome. He came up with wireless lights. It was said to be impractical so it wasent used. Funny allmost all his inventions are used but that one. But long story short its time to rewire my friend.

Nape. That is hard wired in. If you want it to go elsewhere, you are gonna have to make a hole in the drywall alongside each stud (3"x3" square so you can get a right angle drill in and drill a hole sideways thru the stud and fish the wire thru from the switch to the other outlet<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>(oh bother on the 3" holes, cut a track about a foot wide and go to the next hole doing all the drilling thru the studs so you can fish the wire thru. You are gonna have to do some wall patching anyways. If it is an outside wall, a bigger bother as a vapor barrier and insulation is involved.
