Replace it with shallow caves like Terra Cota flower pots and natural rock formations. That way the fish feel safe, and you get to see them.

Well they need places to hide and if you remove it and dont add good enough hiding places then the fish could get stressed and get ill. So, maybe adding rock work with caves that allow you to see into and add some real or fake plants. Real plants will help keep nitrates down. hope this helps.

The fish are hiding because they don't feel comfortable in your tank. Most fish tanks are very bare, but they should really have a large amount of plants, caves, driftwood, and large rocks. If you set up your tank for comfort, your fish will come out alot more.

Rocks and plants are always good. They look good from the outside and the fish like it too. Fish will hid, it's what they do. But giving them a lot of smaller things (plants and rocks) instead of one big thing will lure them out into the open more, moving between each decoration. Also, by doing this you give them more things to explore and they will enjoy it.

But the point is, is the fishy like it!
We have two stumps/logs in our tank & yes, there are some fish we rarely see...
You can prop shells up that are big enough for that particular fish & if you prop it up to the front of the tank, then you can always see the ones who like to hide.

Put the tree stump back in, The fish feel secure there, Thats why they go there, and you dont 'make' your fish eat shrimp pellets if they want to eat them then they will eat them, if they dont then they dont.

well i would guess you just reach in and pull it out. i would replace it with lots of smaller pieces of drift wood, plants, rocks, etc. just so the fish still have places to hide
