When you see poor people at the grocery store who dress
poorly. It makes you think how blessed you are to have clean
newer clothes not needing repair.
Or worse yet, seeing street people, who are pushing grocery
carts with plastic bags holding their possessions along a
downtown sidewalk.
Seeing people lined up outside a soup kitchen, waiting for
a hot meal.
Seeing a line up of low incomed people outside a church
annex waiting for a free food box, with a small child or two
holding onto their mothers' hand.
There's alot of things we see most every day, when we are
out and about, to remind us that our country is filled with alot
of poor people. People that may be just like you or I and have
no good place to call home. That rely on charity to get by
each and every month. Our government is the only one that
doesn't take good care of its' elderly or poor. And yet
they find the money to help those in other countries, so that
we will have allies and friends in the world.
I'm sure we all hope we will someday see a government
who listens to the people, will take care of the poor and
homeless, and stop all of the unwanted illegal aliens from
coming into our country and draining the coffers of the
money that could help our own American citizens
We can be greatful, that we are Americans, first and foremost, and weren't born in a third world country. But we
can still be born poor.

I don't think that we have to necessarily have something taken away from us in order to appreciate it or be grateful for it. After all, I don't think my children have to die in order for me to appreciate what wonderful and precious gifts they are to me every day.
However, I agree with Dan (above), that making a list of the things you are grateful for is very helpful in raising one's awareness of just how many things there are in our lives to be grateful for, and quite frankly, I believe that when a person is depressed or feeling sorry for themselves, doing this basic exercise of listing the things you are grateful for can pull a person out of most mild to moderate depression.
Just being AWARE every day of the simple to the extraordinary blessings that are in our lives is 'learned' appreciation.

Make a list of everyone who loves you in your life.
Make a list of everyone you love in your life.
Make a list of all the nice things you own.
Make a list of all the nice things that are available to you.
Go for a walk, and on the way, count the number of beautiful things you see.
When you get back, just stop and look at what you have: a place to come back to.
