in the fifth book Harry stood up in his D.A.D.A. class and proclaimed that Lord Voldemort was back. When Umbridge tried to make him sit down he wouldn't.
So she gave him detention and as his punishment he had to write "I must not tell lies" but instead of ink her "special" quill used his own blood

In the fifth book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix, he continually told everyone, including Hogwarts High Inquistor, Dolores Jane Umbridge, that the Dark Lord, Lord Voldemort, had returned and was now walking amonst the living. HE also said that Cedric Diggory was murdered at the hands of Voldemort(or better said, Voldemort's right hand man, Peter Pettigrew). His punishment was detention with her and the penalty of writing lines. She provided Harry with a quill that used his blood as ink as he wrote it on the paper. He spoke out so many times and got so many detentions that the scar remained there.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Hogwart's newest Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Umbridge gives Harry a detention for "telling lies" about Voldemort's return. His detention is writing the line "I will not tell lies" with a special quill. This quill etches the line into the back of his hand.

In the fifth, Umbridge makes him write "I will not lie" on a sheet of paper for detention. The quill made the scars.

OMG! Who are you?! You're an embarrassment to Harry Potter fans, shut your mouth! Harry gets that in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Professor ("Professor") Umbridge makes Harry do detention for disputing her disbelief that Voldemort had returned, and in detention he has to write over and over with one of her 'special' quills, on a piece of paper, the line "I must not tell lies" over and over and over. It actually causes cuts in his hand, which heal over immediately. After doing it for hours over several detentions, however, it becomes a scar. Essence of Murtlap helps though.

Book 5, in his first detention with Umbridge. That lovely woman gave him a rather unique quill that did need ink to write lines with. Instead, what he wrote on paper got etched into his hand.

Oh, and the "That lovely woman" comment is meant to be dripping with sarcasm and contempt for the putrid litte *********.

"I must not tell lies"
In Order of the Phoenix Professor Umbridge punished Harry for saying that Voldemort had returned. She made him write lines with a quill that etched that into his hand.

Correction, it says, "I will not tell lies." Harry got it in Book 5, when Harry was telling Professor Umbridge that Voldemort was coming back in front of the class. She said she wanted to see him that evening. He went to her office and was directed to write "I will not tell lies" until it was embedded in him. Little did he know that she meant literally. She gave him one of her quills to use. Instead of using real ink, it used Harry's blood.

He got it because of that teacher that made him write sentences because he spoke out in class and said something the ministry was trying to hide. The quil that that proffesser gave him didnt have ink, because it burned it into his hand as a punishment. Proffeser McGonnagal had it out with her about this type of punishment and said it was medevil punishment and should not be used. You had to listen
