The website listed below says that zebra mussels are ideal subjects for studying meiosis and muscle structure. The site also says that zebra mussels can be used in the study of history, economics, biology, physiology, and ecology.

Zebra mussels do filter the water extremely well, making water clearer and allowing more light to reach the submerged plants. However, they are such good filter-feeders that they take more than their share of the plankton and starve out the native mussels. This is not discussed on the site mentioned below, but it is a well-known effect of zebra mussel infestation.

Zebra Mussels - more black than white? Take them home - wash them and cook them - they are great with fries! The flesh should be beige, orange otherwise ask a local monger for a sample mussel.
