My kids found the body of a barn owl in the desert behind our house. It's head and a wing had been ripped off the body, but the parts were intact (whole). What would/could do this to an owl?

what kind of owl was it?
if it was a small owl it could have been a cat or a hawk or eagle.

My first idea was a car! But obviously after reading the rest of your post that wasn't the issue in your case. Sounds like a scavenger animal, or a predator such as a coyote. It could have been scared off before being able to finish its meal leaving the rest behind.
