Every time I turn the lights in the hood on my fish quickly swim behind a rock and stay there until I turn the light off.
Why is that?
Is it better not to turn the hood lights on at all? (I don't have any live plants, so this is not a problem)
Will the fish be harmed if I don't turn the lights on?

Try turning on a bright room light first, or opening curtains or blinds in the room. It's not the light that's the problem, it's the sudden change from dark to light that's scaring them.
Even if you can't do those things, they will eventually get more used to it and not react quite so badly.

The fish don't care. They just don't like the sudden change in lighting. If you let a lot of light into the room, and turn the tank lights on 5 minutes later, they will be better and act normally. The fish don't care if the lights are on or not. The only reason tanks have them is because people think they make the tank look nicer. My fish don't care about the light, but they don't like the clicking noise it makes when you flip the switch. Good luck!

It's kind of like when you first wake up in the morning. If you're in a dead sleep & someone shines a bright light in your eyes, it's not much fun. They have to adjust. Try letting some sun light in the room before turning on the tank light.

it all depends on what type of fish you have, some fishes natural habitat is dark and shady and they prefer that type of environment in your aquarium, when they are in intense light they feel insecure, placing a few plants and some more hiding spots would be a good idea, the plants will provide shade and places for your fish to hide. i don't think it will harm your fish to keep the lights off, if they are more comfortable in dimmer lighting then it shouldn't hurt them. a little more information on your fish and tank setup would help.

that's thoroughly commonly used, mild can rather stress your fish(that's why his facets have been given greater, protection mechanism). merely depart the mild off for some days then attempt back until eventually he's used to it. do no longer be scared to grant him a cave or some thing the place he can conceal too.

fish do need light but their eyes may be used to the dark, and they hide from the light, also maybe they are afraid of you...do you stay near the tank with the light on? how often do you confront your fish?
