I have a 9 month old baby boy who just doesnt seem to care much about eating solid foods. He takes about 5-6 bites and then he starts making horrible faces and gagging. I have called his doctor and he said it could be the texture, so we tried mashed potatos, but he still gagged. He is a healthy weight, he gets 24-30 ounces of formula a day, and he loves it, but just wont eat much more than a few bites of solids. Any suggestions?

Have you tried him on cereal? That's how I started my 9 mo old and he loves all solids. You start out with really watery cereal to ease the transition from liquid to solid. Mix 1 tbsp cereal with 4-5 tbsp water or breast milk and start slowly.

Your baby may not be ready to eat these foods. Don't force him. Continue feeding him the soft foods. Try introducing him to 2nd stage foods from gerber or etc. Have you ever tried feeding him baby cereal. You may want to start that at a creamy stage and gradually make it thicker as he becomes accustom to the new texture. Mix some of the baby jar fruits in the cereal to make the taste more appealing.

My baby, who is now 1, didn't like solids or even very thick baby foods for the longest time. But, her teeth came in late, and it happens that the more teeth she gets, the more interested she is in trying table foods.

Also recently she's having a growth spurt and I guess she got so hungry she got less picky!

You didn't mention if you've tried baby food. If not, start with baby cereal. Make it very thin at first so it's mostly liquid, and gradually thicken as he gets used to it. www.gerber.com has a good step by step guide to offering baby food.

For now, just give him a few bites of solid food multiple times per day. It seems that's what he wants.

Keep a watch on him and see if it gets better or doesn't. If it doesn't get better or you start to see other "symptoms" that worry you, go back to the doctor or try another doctor.

persistence is key, I didnt have this problem with my daughter. She loved food and wanted it before I gave it to her. But my suggestion would be to put your little boy in the highchair at dinner time and give him some of the food that he can pick up himself. Pull the highchair up to the table and while you and whoever else eat dinner let him sit there and either play with his food or eat it. make sure hes getting his bottles everyday but try to hold one back for a bit before dinner/after dinner.

Recently my daughter decided that she was only going to eat when it was convenient for her. So now she doesnt get an afternoon snack and we have dinner a little earlier.

this may/may not work for you.....but good luck

by the way....did he eat the baby foods without problem?

Have you tried things your son can feed himself, like cheerios, baby mum mums, etc.
Try really ripe fruit in pieces.
Try all table foods cut small.
Try yogurt.
