Wait at least until the first service pack to upgrade. Vista was released before many hardware manufacturers had been given enough time to write Vista drivers. There is a lot of hardware that doesn't work. Laptop hardware can be particularly exotic.

You can download the Vista Upgrade Advisor from Microsofts website, it will tell you if there are drivers available for you devices. Or you can visit the website of your hardware manufacturers and see if the drivers are available there.
I suggest waiting until the first Service Pack becomes available before upgrading.

Is there a school counselor or someone who you could go to? That way she could get someone to help her without necessarily having to go to the hospital. Otherwise I'd encourage her to talk to a school nurse or her regular doctor. A word on the "attention seeking" bit: one thing I've figured out is it's not always wrong to want attention. It sounds like she's being ignored at home. Sometimes part of self-injury can be a sort of way of saying "hey, I'm here, I'm a real person, and I'm really hurting, would someone help me?" So it can be sort of about attention, but not in a bad way, because we all need attention sometimes. Just try to listen to her. Explain why you didn't want to take her to the hospital. Let her know that you love her and are willing to support her.

Why would you even think about something so horrid? If you have xp ,stay with xp and avoid any cofusion. If you really wanted vista , you could find all the different drivers sites on your notebook , and see if there is a vista version , but ...why?!
