I have a few different theries. The one that I hope is true is that it was just to soon after Snape's death so a portrait just didn't appear yet.

One theory that I don't like so much is that since he was essentially sacked, he didn't get a portrait.

But, Snape was definitely a rightful headmaster. Him being able to be in the Headmaster's office is proof enough for that. Umbridge while headmistress couldn't get into that office.

The headmasters portrait is placed in the office AFTER they die or resign. considering that snape flew out of the school and was killed soon after it isnt likely that any artist was able to paint the ugly freak in that time...especially with all the conflict and turmoil going on at that time.

I hope he has one. He deserves one; even if he was put in the position by Voldemort, even if no one knew, he was on the side of Albus and Hogwarts all the time. He promised Albus he'd do his best to keep the students safe; he gave Ginny & Neville detention with Hagrid out of all people when they try to steal the sword, I'm sure he knew they'd have a nice field trip instead of a 'horrible detention'... and while he of course couldn't keep them all safe from the Carrows without Voldemort getting suspicious I don't think a single student (who hadn't left school) died before the final battle, while Muggleborns and halfbloods outside Hogwarts were going down by the dozen.

Umbridge on the other hand isn't dead yet (that's one death I would've liked to see!) and also she was never loyal to Hogwarts even when she was Headmistress, her loyalty was all to the Ministry and her own schemes.

portraits are not hung up while the headmaster is curently in office, Snape fled at the start of the battle while he was still the acting headmaster.

Umbridge's wasn't; I think the headmaster/headmistress has to have been a deputy at some point, and McGonagall was deputy. If she became headmistress (which I hope she did,) then when she dies her portrait would hang there.

Only the "rightful headmaster" gets the portrait, I think.

It should be, but perhaps with all the distractions, no one thought to have one commissioned.
