Vermont or New York State would be the closest U.S. States to the province of Quebec.

Don't you have a map at home?!?

New York State is the closest to Montreal. There's a town in the north of NY called Plattsburg. It's the first largish town after leaving Canada. Not very exciting though!! Albany NY is perhaps a little more exciting...it would be about a 4-5 hour drive from Montreal.

Burlington Vermont is also relatively close to Montreal. Although I do believe if you want to get there by Greyhound, you will have to change buses somewhere along the line.

New York (state, NOT city) is the closest; you can reach it in about a half-hour on Rt 15.

Vermont is almost as close.

Beautiful Lake Champlain runs along both states (and a little bit of Quebec). NY has the Adirondack Mts and Lake Placid not thatfar from the border, while Vermont has Burlington (a very cultural small city) and the Green Mountains.

ADDED: RE: If you are limited to GREYHOUND:
On the NY side, generally the only stop is Plattsburgh before buses continue on another 2.5 hours for Albany. Plattsburgh is an okay little city (I've lived there), but it's no great shakes, and you're kind of limited as to getting around.

You can also get to Burlington, VT, by Greyhound, which will offer you much more to do and see by foot (you can even ride the ferry back and forth across the widest part of Lake Champlain. It's beautiful!).

The closest state to Montreal would have to be New York. The fastest way would be to take Highway 40.

I used to live in Saint Albans, Vermont and it took us literally 50 minutes to drive to Montreal. Sometimes when the border was busy we would head over to New York to cross into Canada. Those are your two best bets...

try plattsburgh ny or burlington vt, and go though either champlain, rouses point, noyan qc, or phillipsburg but if youre willing to drive 3+ hours, there are some outlets off of exit 20 on the 87 and albany ny has a cheesecake factory
