i was going to ask the same thing, anyways, the giants aren't the best at scoring runs for their pitchers, but that isnt the only reason, zito is walking hitters more then we expect from him, he has one good start and than four bad. he is losing command of his fastball and he doesnt have the same touch on his curveball as he did with oakland. i still think he feels the pressure of his gigantic contract, living in san francisco i feel he is overpaid and overrated. i still want him to do good, but he hasnt shown me anything to cheer for.

edit: i also read an article that the giants are looking to land mark buehrle, which is absolutely unbelievable, but then it said they are looking to trade lowry for mark texeira of the rangers, hmmm.

It should have been obvious to the Giants that they were getting a pitcher whose career peaked at a young age. Many of us predicted this dropoff, and it shouldn't be the least bit surprising.

Zito 3.83 ERA last season is misleading. His WHIP was 1.40, which is an indication that he was fortunate to not have a much higher ERA. He's actually fortunate to not have even higher numbers, given that his BABIP was only .288.

Most baseball people also recognize the fact that Zito's velocity has taken a nosedive over the past several seasons. He still has that nasty curve, but hitters can sit on his fastball when they're ahead in the count. His strikeouts per innings pitched have seen a serious decline from his 2002 Cy Young-winning season, and his ERA has subsequently climbed.

No surprise. The Giants have thrown tens of millions of dollars at a guy who should be, at best, a third starter. They'll be regretting this one for years.

Heck, the Giants have had a history of pitchers with rollercoaster seasons. It's nothing new, but I think that even with a guaranteed contract, I'd get nervous with all the expectations from the fans and media.

I just hope that this will be the down season for Barry, then he'll hopefully regain his form for next year.

He is part of the Law Firm, Hudson, Mulder, Zito. They have all struggled with new teams. I think Hudson got back to form this year and Mulder has shown signs at times (too bad injuries have slowed him). I think next year Zito will bounce back.

The one thing that binds all of these guys is that maybe the jump from the AL to the NL was a big jump for them and they need a little adjusting to get used to the new league.

7-10 for a team thats 41-56 isnt that bad... his walks 54 in 117 innings is consistant with his performance of the last few years tallies in this area... you have to consider that hes an off speed american league type of pitcher going to a fast ball hitting league... he doesnt have much of a fast ball...that combined with a new pitching coach may be some of the reasons hes not the world beater of a few years ago... how much pressure is there on him to perform in sfo considering hes lived there and played across the bay for years???? none.. right....
now regarding mark buehrle... he will NEVER, repeat NEVER play for the sfo giants.. why??? because he signed an new contract with a NO TRADE CLAUSE!!!! he doesnt want to play anywhere but for the whitesux.....interesting...isnt it??? have you considered finding something good to say about your team and its players, other than your supporting and parroting the bonds* opinions you share with the world?????

He is not having a terrible season. He is 7-10 with almost 80 k's. Most pitchers. I guess because he was one of the best pitchers before, his stats seem bad, but they are really above average.

When he crossed the bay he seemed to have left his command in Oakland. If he cant' spot his fastball, his big curveball is useless. Not to mention that if he's missing his spots with both those pitches up like he's been doing in about half of his games, even the worst of major league hitters is going to cream the ball.

Zito has lost his velocity. Very bad news for a pitcher.

New league, and it is possible that Barry may be hurt. Barry logged a lot of innings on the other side of the bay.

well its not shocking his numbers have declined since his cy young. maybe it will be on the next unsolved mysteries. he still has a nasty curve but what can u say is record is putrid in the N.L and in a pitchers park. I'm really not shocked though because once again ever since the cy young he hasn't been the same. and never wins a playoff game
