A supermarket will have 2 applicants, apply for a job at the same time.

The one applicant can't spell anything and can't read too good. He/she will have a snippy attitude, and wear sloppy clothes all the time. The suprmarket interviews this applicant, and he/she dressed in stained clothes and has an odor, from not showering.

The second applicant always dreeses neatly, and is well educated. He has a good personality, and is willing to do any supermarket job with effort. The supermarket is aware of this, and doesn't even bother to interview him.

I experienced this a number of times, and this annoys me so badly.

That's because the markets don't care about customer service. They hire people willing to work but when it comes to helping customers..well forget it. I have noticed some change...seems some of the stores here in California lost customers during the strike...people went to shop elsewhere. Now you walk into the stores and the workers will say good morning and are making an effort to be nice to customers. Well they should have been doing that before!!

Maybe they feel that the second applicant is over qualified..and won't want to deal with the grunt work involved in a supermarket job. As for the first applicant they probably feel that they can pay him less and work him harder....so in a way the store is saving the other applicant some stress and trouble.

Sorry I never noticed this, and I can't say I have much complaint to supermarket employees (excet one itme I met an old classmate and THAT was weird, not the market's fault tho)

Shouldn't the well dressed person apply somewhere else? I guess the market could get away with paying the sloppy one less anyways.

You are assuming a lot from just your experience.

Your next interview, try this. Go to the interview with the attitude that you already have the job. I don't mean be a smart aleck, I mean, ask questions about what will you being doing. Don't say, "I'm willing to work whenever you need me," that sounds like begging. Say, "My schedule is usually pretty flexible right now" or something like that. Don't say, "I can do whatever you need me to do," but instead say "So what did you have in mind for me?" You see, that puts the ball in their court and makes them picture you on the job. Try it.

i manage a supermarket and could care less about what you speak of. i want someone who isnt afraid to get dirty, understands what the customer wants and i dont need to train. the college boys fail and the independent types succeed. by treating this as a personell type interview you lose. its clearly a blue collar job, treat it as such.
