Nothing serious just some states making fun of some other because of something typical of their place...
I'd love to know more!

Some people in the Southern states still have a problem with the Northern states or Notherners. Some Northerners think most Southerners are stupid. West Virginia, a truly beautiful state, is known for being poor and having an uneducated population--not really true. California is thought of as having really spacey people. Texans are thought of as being rough and really independent and a bit nuts in that they are thought of as liking to fight. Boston is known as being snobby (not really true). Cleveland, Ohio and Detroit , Michigan are known for being ugly. (Not completely true with Cleveland.) That is all I can think of. Mostly, there is a Northern/Southern thing left over from the civil war because the Northern Union army burned down so much of the South. This was done to end the war sooner. Frankly, given that they were fighting for the right to continue holding human beings in slavery, I don't feel sorry for them. They need to get over it. They were more than just wrong.

Yes there is a degree of mocking that goes on between states. Most of it is harmless jokes that mean nothing. Most people just want to express pride in their state by saying how much better it is than some other state. There are long standing sports rivalries and some disagreements based on social differences. The North-South thing means more to some people than to others. If you talk to most Southerners they just think Yankees are rude. And Yankees prove it all the time by calling Southerners stupid. Nobody is still fighting the civil war but some people are still touchy about it. When it all boils down we are all Americans and we come together when it counts. And everyone knows that you just don't mess with Texas.

Yankees (people from northern states) have this idea that all Southerners are idiots while in fact it is a lot closer to being the other way around.
They come south for the warm weather and proceed to tell everyone How they did it up north. They complain about the humidity, but keep coming back.
I spent one winter in Michigan (one too many) and when people found out that I was from the south, many of them told me that they hoped I wouldn't drive in the winter, because southerners don't know how to drive on snow and ice. Well, I never had a single accident while I was there, and I passed a lot of Yankee drivers who had run off the road or had other accidents because, obviously, they don't know squat about driving in the ice and snow.
Mostly Yankees are rude and ignorant, but believe they are enlightened and intelligent.

Really I thought this was a great question to answer but when I read the other answers I found that my brother had beat me to it, Funny since he lives in Texas and I live in Kentucky. So I'll say James L is correct, to a point. Don't mess with Texas, or Texans, even if they are forced to live in Kentucky.

Oh, sure. I used to live in New Jersey and people from New York and Pennsylvania--specifically Philadelphia, PA--mock people from New Jersey mercilessly. And people from New Jersey tend to look down on people from Delaware.

Only in sports. And amongst people who have never even been to the state they are baggin on, so it makes them illigitimate from the start.

Minnesota and Iowa and Wisconsin have had long running rivalries ... mostly around college sports

and I grew up on jokes like 'what do Iowa cheer leader do at halftime? ... (graze)'

and 'what does I.O.W.A. stand for? ... (idiots out walking around)'
