Lackland is in the south west side out town, not good part of town. The closest that I can recommend you live would be in the following areas:
-Bandera Rd @ Loop 1604 - 78256
-I-10 at Medical Drive - 78229
-I-10 at DeZavala - 78249
-Wurzbach Rd @ Vance Jackson - 78230 (Colonies North)
About 15 miles away is:
-Thousand Oaks @ Jones Maltsberger - 78247
-Broadway @ Bitters - 78217 (NE Park)
So in summary the best zip codes are:
-78249
-78217
-78232
-78247
-78230
-78229
-78254
-78233
Do not, and I mean Do not even consider an area near Lackland, it's just too unsafe. My dad has worked there for about 22 years and he tells me that it's just deteriorating out there everyday.
Stay Away from
-South Side
-West Side
-East Side
-South East Side
These parts of town are filled with crime and gang activity.
The graffiti is unbelievably out of control, your fences, and cars will be tagged and broken into.
The school districts are very poor.
School districts to avoid:
-Harlendale
-South Side
-South San
-Edgewood
-San Antonio
-East Central (The schools are very very spread out)
The "go-to" school districts
-North East ISD (The Best one, I attended that one all my school life - Regency Elem, Driscoll Middle, MacArthur HS.
-North Side ISD (It reaches some bad areas on the far west side)
-Judson ISD
-Alamo Heights ISD
**Extra note:
Last month on the news, they had a special on child abuse cases in San Antonio. The zip codes around Lackland had the highest rate of abuse cases in the city.
**Any questions e-mail me.

I agree with Kevin, stay FAR away from any place very close to Lackland. I work in that general area (not by choice) and all I see is graffiti and deteriorating houses. Crime is also high on that side of town, it seems like every morning you can wake up and watch the news telling of all the drive-bys, stabbings and children being abused in those areas. I also had my car broken into a few weeks ago in the middle of the day while I was at work.
As far as living in NW or N SA, especially along 1604, you will pay the price in commuting times.
Personally, if I was moving into the area and had to work at lackland, I'd consider living in Castroville and commuting (it's a short, quick commute). Generally, Castroville is quiet, kind of out in the country and safe. The schools are small as well.
Good luck!

You can probably get a home on the NW side of town very close to Lackland for under 150k. Try these zip codes 78250, 78251. It would be Northside Independent School District.

I won't put down another part of the city as one person has done, I will tell you that the fastest growing part of the city is the far west side, with about 50,000 new homes either just finished, under construction or will be under construction as soon as a crew can get to it. The neighborhoods in and around the Sea World area are safe and clean and new. This area has a problem but is being dealt with as I write this answer and that is our immense traffic problems. Most of the children that go to school in this area are going to go to new schools. Within a mile and a half of the intersection of Potranco Road and 1604 there are several new Banks, several places to eat, car wash, Super Wal-mart, HEB Plus, Kohl's, storage lockers, several colleges, a New General Hospital, hotels and motels, Microsoft,CTI, and many mor to come. Not my opinion but the opinion of the national school evaluation board is the one of the schools in the North Side Independent School District is number 8 in the nation and NISD is the number one school district in the San Antonio Area, Every part of a city has it's time in the sun and now is the time for the far west side. The choice is up to you but you won't go wrong if you pick the far west side.

There are nice areas in many parts of town. The biggest thing to consider is where to get your children educated if you have any. Northside and Northeast ISDs and Alamo Heights ISD are all very good, schools are well kept and reasonably safe (though so was Columbine). The freeways to Lackland are very good and I was able to make it from Canyon Lake (about 40 mi from downtown) to Wilford Hall Hospital in about an hour to 11/4 hours without any significant difficulties. Please note even in the NEISD and NISD area there are some bad/run down neighborhoods. But, then againe, SATX is the 9th largest city in the US and we have big city problems like everyone else

I grew up right here then moved to Dallas for some years then relocated lower back right here. the city remains great yet relatively dealing with some growing to be pains. The site visitors is undesirable b/c of shape everywhere. I accept as true with others, the nightlife right it fairly is relatively not great while in comparison with different cities even with the undeniable fact that it is likewise no longer undesirable. Plus, you are able to occasion up in Austin this is barely an hour away. the fee of living is fairly much lower priced!!! There are numerous issues to do yet lower back we at the instant are not a extensive cosmopolitan city like a San Fran, NYC, l. a. or maybe Dallas or Phoenix. appropriate places to stay relies upon on what you want. i think of the Northeast hall is extraordinarily puffed up. The Northwest area is great yet kinda uninteresting. you are going to be able to desire to pass there once you have a kin and young babies to advance. i could propose for a teenager to stay merely north of downtown or around the scientific center area. numerous jobs and many places to work out.

Look in the Northside School District beyond Loop 410 closer to 1604. Bandera is a good bet as is Culebra, but north. Nice area near Stevens high school.

Although it's a bit of a hike to Lackland, it's a nice place to live.

The best place to live in San Antonio is in one of the northern suburbs.
Rochester, Minnesota is one of the better ones.
