my parents always shove aside my acting dreams. if i try to talk to them seriously about it, they put it off til later or say now's not the right time or something else stupid... if i send an awesome picture of myself with good lighting and everything but not necessarily professional to an agency, would they care?

Only if you care about having a professional acting career! Yes, they would care.

Your headshot and resume will be tossed in the trashcan, because it's not professional.

Anything you do for acting must be 100% perfect. You don't want to give the agent a reason to reject you.

I live in an area where there are very very few professional actors, much less professional photographers who specialize in taking head shots. However, all professional photographers know enough that if you went to them and explained what you need they could accomodate you. Headshots are very important and they should look like you and not some retouched, photoshop portrait of you. Of course it has to be a good picture of your face, but it shouldn't be doctored up. Call around to some professionals and tell them what you're looking for. They can give you a ballpark figure of how much it would cost. And as far as your parents are concerned....you will not be living at home forever.....one would hope. All the previous people who answered you are right. Do theater close to home. Learn what you can for free and have fun with it. Build a resume with all that you do with community theater. Every actor has to start somewhere. Good luck.

As long as it looks like you would be a good candidate they will not. I know for sure that modeling agencies in New York, Ford for one, prefer that you send home taken shots. Why don't you get involved in theatre at school or in a local theatre troop? You could get a job there working the lights or as an usher. Lots of really famous actors got their start this way.

Your parents are right. Just act for fun for now. When you get older you can do what you want. And if you don't have your parent's support you can't persue it professionally anyway. They have to pay for everything, drive you everywhere and sign the contracts for you.
