Dang, this list is breaking my heart. I see so many that I miss.
Being an old fart, my first instincts were to respond with Jimi Hendrix or John Lennon or Frank Zappa among others. After thinking about it I would pick Brad Nowell of Sublime. He never got to see the success of his work or his son growing up.

I would probably have to say dime, because he was taken so unfairly. i would bring layne back, buy how would we know that he wouldn't come back still addicted to heroin.

also, alice is working on new material for a new album with William DuVall, i've seen them both live, and DuVall isn't layne but he isn't bad and thats the best we could hope for.
