my friend is going to get in vitro next year, i have read quite a bit about it, but i wanted to ask somebody who has had the procedure done, how difficult was it for you? how common is it to have multiples? i guess anything you can tell me about it, she has wanted a baby so long I'm so worried about her, if it didn't work i think it would kill her.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive treatment in which the female gamete or ovum is fertilized with the male gamete or sperm outside of the body. Once fertilization has taken place, the egg is placed directly into the uterus.

When deciding whether or not to pursue IVF treatment there are a number of factors to consider. Not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure, but women who possess some or all of the following characteristics might be:

• 35 years of age or less
• Willing to risk having multiple children – about 25 percent of successful IVF treatments result in twins and 2 to 3 percent result in triplets or quadruplets.
• Less than three years of dealing with infertility
• Possibility of undergoing ovulation induction or hormone treatment
• The ability to use your own eggs in the procedure
• Willing to use the eggs now as opposed to after cryopreservation (freezing)

The success rate for IVF depends upon the age of the recipient, whether or not she uses her own eggs and whether or not the eggs are freshly harvested or have been frozen and preserved. However, the successful rate of pregnancy is similar to that of conventionally conceived pregnancies: 37 percent for women 35 years old and under, 28 percent for women between the ages of 36 and 39, and 13 percent for women over the age of 40.

We are married for 6 1/2 years and never used contraceptives. We had been seriously trying to conceive for 2 1/2 years. I had 5 of 6 embryos put back and I'm 31 weeks pregnant w/our first child (son). I was worried I'd have 3 or more, but rather have that many than none or have to go through it again. When the technician told me it was one baby, I asked for a second opinion ;)
I started out giving myslef one injection a day, then two, and just before the retrieval three a day for almost a week. I really couldn't see past that 1st cycle of IVF. My mom on the other hand kept worrying that it wouldn't work b/c she had heard of a good amount of women who went through many cycles without success.

technology has improved so much that most IVF procedures are sucessful on the first or second try. Its an intense process, and there is a higher risk of multiples, but your friend can request to have only 2-3 embryos implanted at a time, rather than the 6 or so they used to do. I wish her good luck

IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment; is very cheap in India. The cost is very low and the medical services are very good in India.

My cousin and her husband got their IVF treatment in India through the Indian Med Guru in India and is all praise for this company. She is a known case of PCOS.She is a very happy mother of a baby boy now. She just paid 2500 pounds for the full IVF treatment in India for which she was quoted 8000 pounds in private setup in UK.

Indian Med Guru is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the newspapers. I have also read about a Chinese couple who planned surrogacy through the Indian Med Guru. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery and infertility treatment like IVF, IUI, and ICSI abroad for low price. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery and treatment can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.
