ghapy is correct, but if you stir it every few days it will look ok, i assume freshwater so i will say lowes playsand, not anythign else play only. for saltwater dont use gravel, if ytou want thre mixed look use crushed coral witht the sand, as for cleaning vacuum and replace the sand, or if its saltwater leave it alone and get narrissius snails, hermits, and other sand stirrers

You can do it and t can make a very attractive mix, but it does make cleaning the tank a bit more difficult. Sand is difficult to vacuum, but that is still the best method. In addition to cleaning the surface of the sand, you will need to poke it all over well from time to time to make sure it's not collecting a pocket of bacteria and producing potentially deadly gases in the sand.

Trust me on this - forget about it, it's a waste of your time. Sand is much finer then gravel, and will sink down - the gravel will end up on top, sand on the bottom, and you may as well just go with gravel. Won't do any harm, but you'll see.

You can do it, you just need to have a good out of water filtration system as you are going to have a tough time keeping it clean with an undergravel filter with sand. You're going to need to periodically stir up the sand to release the stale air pockets that form in the sand.
