THE PERSIAN EMPIRE
The Persian Empire was a series of historical empires that ruled over the Iranian plateau, the old Persian homeland, and beyond in Western Asia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. The Persian empire has become what we know today as Persia or more commonly, Iran. The most widespread entity considered to have been a Persian Empire was the Achaemenid Empire (550–330 BC) — famous in antiquity as the foe of the classical Greek states — a united Iranian kingdom that originated in the region now known as Pars province of Iran. It was formed under Cyrus the Great, who overthrew the empire of the Medes, and conquered much of the Middle East, including the territories of the Babylonians, the Phoenicians, and the Lydians. Cyrus' son, Cambyses, continued Cyrus' conquests by conquering Egypt.
Most of the successive states in Greater Iran prior to March 1935 are collectively called the Persian Empire by Western historians.
Virtually all the successor empires of Persia were major regional and some major international powers in their day.

Either the Lydians or the Celts. The Lydians were the first to use gold and silver as money (just like our modern societies are the first to go on the Paper Standard). We could learn a thing or two from them.
The Celts were one of the freest peoples in history. At one time, they controlled France and the British Isles and were one of the most decentralized cultures in history. They were very tough opponents for the Romans and a group of Celts even sacked Rome before the Romans adopted Welfare Socialism and Currency Debasement, thus destroying their empire. King Arthur was a Celtic leader who stopped an invasion of Britain by the Saxons (which occurred shortly after the Romans left). During the Middle Ages, the Celts ran a free market legal system in Ireland and held off English invasions for 1000 years until the fascist dictator Cromwell finally defeated them (the motto of Cromwell's dictatorship of England was "Peace is sought through War").
We could learn alot from the Celts and the Lydians. We'd be much richer if we'd return to using Gold and Silver as money and we'd have a much more just legal system if we would privatize it, as well as everything else.

The Macedonian empire (the empire of Alexander the Great). It was the largest empire in the ancient world aside from the Roman empire, and covered a vast amount of europe and asia minor. Alexander the Great's army was also incredibly astute as far as military strategy, and were able to outwit and defeat the more massive Persian army several times (ending in the capture of Darius III and the subsequent end of the Persian empire).

The Minoans are very impressive. Many of the major tribes in Central and South America were also amazing. I especially liked the policy of the Inca's for collecting taxes. You could pay money, or go work for the government for a month. Brilliant!

The Hittites! They built Bronze Age Anatolia up from nothing to become a power that could challenge Egypt and win.

The Maltese were pretty cool and the Ottomans were pretty powerful. I think the most interesting for me, (and I don't believe anyone considers their holdings as empires), are the barbarians. The norsemen (vikings) were also pretty kick butt.
