It's a 55 gal.

They can be housed together even into adulthood if they have enough space and enough hiding places for each to have a comfortable territory. The problem is a 55 isn't large enough for 2 to have their own territories. A much larger tank would be needed, something on the order of a 110 or 125 gallon tank. The important factor will be the size of the bottom space, not how tall the tank may be.

Yes, you can. I had three of them in a 30 gallon for a while and now I've got an 80 Gallon with the same three as well as 2 rope fish and a cichlid. Just make sure you've got a good filtration system. I've had them for over three years now and the biggest one is only about 5 1/2 inches long.

yes, In the pet store (which is not usually a good idea to use as an example) they have about 8 in the same tank in several sizes. They don't die from stress and don't fight either, but they feed 2 times a day. Normally I don't reference store tanks but in this case I think it answers the Q.

one birchir is going to grow to large for a 55 gallon, so no as your overstocked.

you can possibly get away with it, in a 75 -120.

You can when they are juvies, but I would strongly suggest against it for their full life. In tanks that are 6' long, it is done all the time.
